The Dublin Handel Festival is an annual event that takes place every April to bring to life the connections between Handel and the City of Dublin for Dubliners, Irish people and international visitors, through a week long programme that celebrates the cultural riches of the 18th century in a modern and contemporary context.

Our Lady’s Choral Society and the National Sinfonia, conducted by Proinnsías Ó Duinn, opened this year’s Handel Festival with a unique performance of ‘Messiah on the Street’, beside the original site on Fishamble Street where the Messiah received its world premiere in 1742.

2009 is a very special year for the Dublin Handel Festival as it marks the 250th anniversary of his death.

Question by Shirley B: Yorkshire monologue about Handel’s Messiah?
Anyone recognise my description. I heard it performed at a Yorkshire party at Harewood House……….. roughly it is about a shepherd who was taken to hear Messiah for the first time and his comments on it afterwards. He said “They kept singing ‘we all like sheep’, well we’d hardly be in this business if we didn’t like sheep na would we ?
Can you help me find this ….PLEASE
Thank you for info about Alan Tichmarsh. I will try that. As a lad he used to sing in our Church choir All Saints Ilkley.

Sorry that shouldn’t have come twice. How do I get rid of it.

It sounds like something that Alan Bennett would have written.

  2. This is a monologue that Alan Titchmarsh reads at the carol service in Winchester Cathedral. Try writing to him for a copy (If you need to, you can address him via the BBC)
