Handel ‘Oxford’ Water Music

Updated 1 June 2010

And a late addition to next week’s programme!…..  Handel’s so-called ‘Oxford’ Water Music.

Fiori are well known for finding a new take on familiar music.  And Handel’s Water Music was certainly top of the 18th-century pops. This music fairly conquered England when it was first performed for the entertainment of George I on the Thames in 1717.  So much so that versions of it arose for harpsichord, for flute and for small band.

On 10 June Fiori will be performing all the well known tunes from this popular piece, not in the vast scoring Handel originally designed for the Thames, but in one of the many contemporary arrangements, this one found in an 18th-century manuscript in the library of Christ Church College, Oxford.   So come and experience Handel’s ‘Oxford’ Water Music at first hand!
