Singing Week, 6-12 August 2011
A week with Fiori in historic Budapest
Come with Fiori Musicali to Budapest – one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe! – and discover more about baroque and renaissance choral singing and vocal chamber music. This year's summer Singing Week Abroad takes place in the tranquil surroundings of a baroque monastery, the Seminarium Centrale (not normally open to the public) – right in the historic heart of Budapest, just a short walk from the river Danube.
Fiori's director Penelope Rapson inspires choristers in a week of a cappella renaissance and baroque music, culminating in a final concert at the adjacent baroque church. And, as part of the package, there will be opportunities for vocal consort work where individuals and small groups can work with singers and instrumentalists active in the Hungarian baroque music scene.
We have places for up to 25-30 singers. Significant (non-singing) others are welcome too – and everyone can take part in additional activities (eg painting, drawing, plus 'insider' sightseeing in the company of our local Hungarian friends). There is also an optional one-day extension to include a visit to Eszterháza and see where Haydn spent much of his life.
Singers (active participants) £400
To include accommodation (half board in the monastery) for 7 nights, participation in choral workshops and concerts, and 'break out' sessions with specialist tutors and players.
Partners (passive participants) £300
To include accommodation (half board in the monastery) for 7 nights, and attending all concerts, workshops, etc.
There are single and twin-bedded rooms. Singles can be booked on a first come, first served basis (supplement +£5 / night). Rooms are simple and modest – as befits a seminary. All have WC and shower (en suite for twins, singles share between two).
Breakfast and one main meal (lunch) in the monastery refectory – all included in the price.
Length of stay
Arrival Saturday 6 August, departure Saturday 13 August. You are warmly invited to extend your stay for a night before and / or after for only £35 per person per night (half board). Single person supplement +£5 / night. Longer stays can be arranged.
Fiori 'groupies' are welcome to come and explore Budapest's magic atmosphere with us, and attend all our musical and additional activities (see above). Accommodation and meals are not included, but special rates at nearby hotels and / or meals in the monastery can be arranged.
There is an optional one-day extension to allow time for an all-day trip to the Pannonhalma monastery (a UNESCO World Heritage site) and Eszterháza (Haydn's home for 35 years) on Saturday 13 August. The cost is £50 (excluding lunch), and the day will include a wine tasting on the return. There will also be 'ad hoc' options – visiting the Budapest Opera House, sightseeing in the city during the week, and 'group' social events – details to be confirmed.
Ryanair no longer fly to Budapest from East Midlands, unfortunately, but EasyJet and Wizzair operate regular flights from Luton, and Malév from Gatwick. You will need to make your own travel arrangements.
