Welcome to Fiori Musicali - bringing alive the drama and passion of 17th- and 18th-century music. Fiori's 2005 season is a feast of great music and great artists - beautiful music in stunning historic venues, enhanced by opportunities to delve further into the world of music through lively music appreciation classes. Fiori specialise in taking audiences back to the sound world of an earlier age, presenting familiar repertoire alongside rarer music. Under their founder / director Penelope Rapson, Fiori's programmes are popular with the concert-going public, while Rapson's historically aware approach brings the orchestra's work critical respect too. A cosmopolitan theme runs through the 2005 season of concerts. There is music from Venice, Paris, Rome and of course London. Vivaldi's music figures prominently (following Fiori's recent Vivaldi CD release of chamber concertos featuring star recorder player Pamela Thorby). But lesser known names are in evidence too - there is music by Adrian Willaert, a 16th-century Flemish musician, once famously maestro of St Mark's in Venice. And a unique opportunity to hear stunning choral music by Robert Whyte, master of the choristers at Ely Cathedral and later at Westminster Abbey. Alongside these more obscure musicians, Fiori offer a wealth familiar names - Gabrieli, Corelli, Telemann, Handel, etc - spanning right across the baroque era. Guest musicians appearing with Fiori this season include the inimitable James Bowman (countertenor), popular flautist Katy Bircher, and eton chapel cornetts and sackbuts, acclaimed for their 2003 Prom appearance with the Cardinall's Musick, and Fiori's former leader Kerstin Linder-Dewan, visiting us from Berlin. Also featuring later in the season is Colin Lawson, celebrated exponent of the basset clarinet, who will be joining Fiori for Mozart's famous clarinet concerto. Recognised by the Arts Council England and the Eastern Orchestral Board, Fiori have a strong presence in central England, a residency at the St Ceciliatide International Festival of Music in London, and have toured abroad to the Early Music Festival in Madrid. Running alongside the concert series Fiori Musicali also offer challenging music appreciation classes for those who wish to find out more about music, and have recently begun a pilot project to establish an affiliated choir - Fiorosa - for younger choral singers.
